Severna Park High seniors create homeless drive to benefit locals

severna parkSeniors, Margaret Galdi and Michael Reynolds created a brand new service learning project for their Leadership III project. Working with them were four juniors in the leadership II program; all hoping to advance next year to become Senior Leaders.

The group reached out to local businesses in their community in hopes to receive toiletry donations. They also created a drive throughout their National Honors Society at school for two weeks collecting either money or desired toiletries. It was a huge success collecting over $200 and 600 toiletries. These teens continued meeting every week to make this project as successful as possible. Once all the pieces fell together, they met at Galdi’s house to finally put the kits together through the process of a long assembly line. To top it off, the group made inspirational cards to put in the kits hoping to encourage the receivers that it will get better and someone cares.

Throughout the project, they had a goal to assist the homeless community as much as possible and to make notice that this is still an ongoing problem that we can help. With that, they partnered with Anne Arundel County’s Homeless Resource Day; a one-stop opportunity for people experiencing homelessness or just struggling to sop by and access services, resources and information. As a final product, the group was able to create over 100 toiletry kits as well as excess donations. Each kit contained a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, a comb, Chap Stick, and tissues. Galdi and Reynolds are grateful for the opportunity they had to create this project and hope it can be continued on next year.
