Hospice volunteer to be honored as Bowie Baysox Community Hero

Paul Mullenhoff of Bowie selected as a Baysox Community Hero for his work with Veterans and other patients at Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Paul Mullenhoff, a Bowie man who has donated hundreds of hours in community service to Hospice of the Chesapeake, has been selected as a 2016 Bowie Baysox Community Hero.

Mullenhoff will join several other local community members who also will be honored as Community Heroes at the 7:05 p.m. June 3 home game against the Akron RubberDucks.

Baysox Assistant General Manager Phil Wrye said the program is a “great way to recognize some of the individuals who have had a special impact in our community. We hope to see neighbors come out and support one another and use this opportunity to say thank you to the many men and women that help make this area such a comfortable place to live and work.”

Mullenhoff signed up as a Patient Care Volunteer with Hospice of the Chesapeake soon after his wife died of cancer. Having experienced the comfort, compassion and care the nonprofit offered him and his wife; it was his way to give back. He pays extra attention to the caregiver in the home, as he knows firsthand how much they need his expert respite care. He has offered this loving care to 15 patients and families so far – staying with them through the duration of their time in hospice, which for some became a two-year commitment.

When the organization formed its We Honor Veterans committee, the retired Navy captain of 30 years didn’t hesitate to join and was instrumental in beginning its Honor Salute presentations, which recognize Veterans under hospice care for their service. It’s a formal ceremony performed in the patient’s home or at his or her bedside and often the last salute the Veterans will ever receive. Since the program’s inception, there have been about 180 salutes, of which Paul attended more than a dozen. He is instrumental in bringing the ceremony to other military institutions and hospices across the country, including the United States Naval Academy, Fort George G. Meade and, most recently, West Point Military Academy.

“The Baysox selected Paul Mullenhoff because of his dedication and passion to help others at Hospice of the Chesapeake,” said Brandan Kaiser, Baysox Director of Marketing. “We applaud Paul’s military service and volunteering for the We Honor Veterans committee to give veterans a deserved additional salute while in hospice care.”

“Paul jokes that all that he does amounts to a full time job, but it’s no joke. On top of his patients and Veterans volunteering, he also helps at many events, works four hours each Tuesday at the front desk and even collates admission packets,” said Hospice of the Chesapeake Director of Volunteer Services Diane Sancilio. “We are so pleased that the Baysox see what a treasure he is to our patients, staff and other volunteers. He is a hero to all he serves in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties.”

Mullenhoff will receive four free tickets to the game, a Baysox gift package and recognition from the top of one of the dugouts during the game.
