Errors cost Baysox in loss to Erie

Baysox2016The Baysox committed a pair of errors leading to five unearned runs being scored in a 13-6 loss to the Erie SeaWolves Sunday afternoon. Mike Yastrzemski and Jimmy Paredes both homered in the Baysox losing effort that dropped the team back down to a game below .500 (14-15).

It was a rough start for the Baysox and starting pitcher Jason Garcia. In the top of the first inning, Jeff McVaney reached on a one out fielding error by third baseman Drew Dosch. Jason Krizan followed with a double to right field before McVaney scored on a Garcia wild pitch. Dean Green brought Krizan home on a groundout and John Hicks followed with a single to right field. Dominic Ficociello drew a two out walk and Corey Jones then brought both runners home with a double to center field to give the SeaWolves a 4-0 lead.

The Baysox got on the board in the bottom of the third inning against Erie starter Tommy Collier. Drew Dosch and Jeff Kemp singled to start the inning but were both put-out as Glynn Davis grounded into a fielder’s choice double play. Yatrzemski followed with a home run to right field to make the score 4-2.

Orioles infielder Jimmy Paredes, who was with the Baysox on MLB rehab assignment, hit a solo home run to right field to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and cut the Erie lead to 4-3.

Erie picked up another error-aided run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. John Hicks hit a one-out double to center field and moved to third base when Ficociello reached on a missed catch error by Garcia at first base. Hicks then scored on a Jones fly-out to left field after the Baysox tried to tag-out Ficociello at first base.

The SeaWolves added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kody Eaves hit a lead-off double and Gustavo Nunez followed with a single to put runners at the corners before reliever Jon Keller replaced Garcia on the mound. Nunez was caught-stealing second for the first out of the inning, but McVaney then walked. Krizan grounded out to bring home a run and Green followed with a single to center field that plated a second run to give Erie the 7-3 lead.

Erie kept the runs coming in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Genison Reyes. Nunez singled to center field, McVaney was hit-by-a-pitch and Krizan then homered to right field to make the score 10-3.

The SeaWolves added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Garrett Cortright. Alberto Gonzalez drew a one-out walk and Eaves followed with a home run to right-center field. Cortright exited the game with an injury and was replaced by reliever Jason Stoffel. The final run of the game came on a McVaney home run to left field that made the score 13-3.

The Baysox final rally came in the bottom of the ninth inning against Erie reliever Jose Valdez. Quincy Latimore hit a lead-off double to left-center field and Chris O’Brien followed with a walk. Drew Dosch brought everyone home, including himself, with a single that was misplayed by Erie right field Jeff McVaney that made the final score 13-6.

Garcia threw five innings and allowed six runs (one earned) on nine hits while walking four in the loss. Keller threw two innings and allowed one run on one hit while walking a batter. Reyes threw the eighth inning and allowed three runs on two hits and a walk while hitting one batter. Cortright recorded just one out before allowing a two-run homer in the ninth inning.
