Defensive woes doom Baysox

Baysox2016In the finale of the 2015 ELCS rematch series, the Bowie Baysox struggled both offensively and defensively as Reading won the rubber match game 5-1, to win the series. The Baysox committed three errors leading to three unearned runs for the Fightin Phils while the Baysox sole run did not come until the ninth inning.

The first four innings were uneventful as both starting pitchers breezed through the opposing teams’ lineup the first time around. However, in the top of the fifth inning, Reading struck first against Baysox starter Jason Garcia. Jesmuel Valentin led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by right fielder Quincy Latimore that allowed him to get all the way to third base. He then scored on an Aaron Brown single to left field to give the Fightin Phils a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning, the Fightin Phils, with the assistance of some poor Baysox defense, scored three additional runs. J.P. Crawford reached on a fielding error by first baseman Joey Terdoslavich to start the frame. Jorge Alfaro followed immediately with a single to left field. A wild pitch by Garcia, with one out, moved both runners into scoring position at third and second base. Both runs scored when Rhys Hoskins hit a ground ball single, but the damage ensued on a throwing error by Garcia. Reliever Stefan Crichton then replaced Garcia on the mound and surrendered an RBI double to Jake Fox that brought home a third run and made the score 4-0.

In the top of the ninth inning, Crawford gave Reading a 5-0 lead with a two out solo home run to right field off Baysox reliever Bobby Bundy.

For the second time in the series, the Baysox broke up a Reading shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Hoby Milner. Terdoslavich reached on a throwing error by third baseman Harold Martinez and moved to third base on a one out Chris O’Brien single to right field. Jeff Kemp brought O’Brien home with a sacrifice fly to make the final score 5-1.

Garcia threw 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking two in the loss. Crichton recorded the final two outs in the sixth inning, allowing one inherited runner to score on one hit. Reliever Genison Reyes pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Bundy threw the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Former Baysox pitcher Anthony Vasquez made the start for Reading Wednesday and had a great afternoon against his old team. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the win.

The Baysox hit the road en route to Harrisburg Friday to start a three-game series and complete their roadtrip with a stop in Hartford for three games in two days. Bowie returns home Friday, May 27 for a four game homestand against the Altoona Curve. Friday, LHP Jayson Aquino (1-3, 4.99) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Lucas Giolito (1-2, 3.86).
