Baysox snap 2 game skid

Baysox 2016In a battle of highly-regarded pitchers from the 2014 draft class, the Bowie Baysox and David Hess came out victorious Tuesday. The Baysox beat the Eastern League-leading Hartford Yard Goats and starter Kyle Freeland 6-3 to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Yard Goats picked up right where they left off in the series-opener in the top of the first inning. Ramiel Tapia led off the game with a triple to right field and he scored on a David Dahl groundout to give Hartford the early 1-0 lead.

The Baysox responded in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Yastrzemski drew a lead-off single and Bowie native Jeff Kemp then hit his first Double-A home run to right field to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead.

The next scoring came courtesy of the Yard Goats in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan McMahon hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to second base after a missed catch error by first baseman Chris O’Brien on a pick-off attempt. Correlle Prime followed with a single to center field that plated McMahon and tied the score 2-2.

Jeff Kemp drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to third base on a Quincy Latimore double to left field. Chance Sisco brought one run home on a sacrifice fly to right field. Joey Terdoslavich provided an insurance run with a double to left field to give the Baysox a 4-2 lead.

The Baysox struck again in the seventh inning. Drew Dosch hit a lead-off double to center field, moved to third base on an Adrian Marin sacrifice bunt and scored on a Glynn Davis sacrifice fly to extend the Baysox lead to 5-2.

With Shane Broyles on to pitch the eighth inning for Hartford, Latimore drew a one-out walk and scored on a Sisco double to center field to increase the Baysox lead to 6-2.

The Yard Goats refused to go quietly with a ninth inning rally against Baysox reliever Ashur Tolliver. They loaded the bases courtesy of a walk by McMahon and consecutive singles to left field by Prime and Dillon Thomas. Jason Stoffel then came into the game for Tolliver and proceeded to strike out Jackson Williams, but sacrificed a run when he got Zach Osborne to ground out in a fielder’s choice. With men on the corners, Stoffel got Juan Ciriaco to ground out to end the game.

Hess threw 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one in the win. Reliever Eric Fornataro recorded the final out of the seventh inning, stranding one runner on base. Tolliver threw one inning, allowed three hits, a run and walked a batter before Stoffel came into replace him. Stoffel’s final line was one perfect inning pitched, with a strikeout for his seventh save of the year.

Freeland took the loss for Hartford, throwing seven innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.

The Baysox play the final game in a three-game home series against the Hartford Yard Goats on Wednesday. RHP Parker Bridwell (1-0, 3.55) is scheduled to start for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Zach Jemiola (3-0, 2.34)

The Baysox six game homestand concludes with a day game Wednesday, April 11 at 11:05 a.m. The Baysox then head to Erie for a four game road trip before returning home Tuesday, April 17.
