Military Bowl to open Eastern Shore retreat for wounded service members

Military_Bowl_FINALThe DC Bowl Committee today announced that it is purchasing a 290-acre property near Cambridge, Md., to operate as a retreat for wounded service members and their families. It will be named Patriot Point.

“Patriot Point will be a place for the men and women who serve our nation so selflessly to take the time to recharge,” DC Bowl Committee President & Executive Director Steve Beck said. “We look forward to welcoming these brave men and women to the Eastern Shore and allowing them to enjoy themselves and relax.”

At Patriot Point, guests will be able to hunt and fish. They also will be able to go crabbing and enjoy watersports. Patriot Point has 2.3 miles of waterfront along Parsons Creek, Slaughters Creek and the Little Choptank River, leading to the nearby Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, by maintaining the existing property, Patriot Point will continue to protect wetlands and shoreline.

“We are grateful to our founding partners in this endeavor, Stuart Plank and the Taishoff Family Foundation,” Beck said. “We learned about this property from Stuart, who had visited when its former owner, James Bugg, the Chairman of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, used it to host wounded service members. Patriot Point will further develop and formalize Mr. Bugg’s concept.”

Additionally, the Maryland General Assembly included $500,000 in state capital funding for Patriot Point, which will help the Committee with improvements on the property, including handicap accessibility.

“Patriot Point is a place for the men and women who have served our country to relax and take time away in a stress-free environment with their families and caregivers,” Plank said.

Patriot Point will work with the USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore and other service organizations that work with military personnel to identify guests to use the property.

“Patriot Point definitely fills a need in our local military community,” said Elaine Rogers, president and chief executive officer of USO-Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore. “We look forward to working together to deliver critically needed programs and services that will provide great benefit to our service members and their families.”
