Late rally falls short for the Baysox in Akron

Baysox2016Down by three runs with one out in the ninth inning the Baysox rallied valiantly but fell short. Bowie plated two ninth inning runs but fell on Akron’s home opener 3-2 on Thursday evening.

Baysox DH Quincy Latimore worked a one-out walk to start the rally. It was followed by a slicing double into the left field corner from catcher Chance Sisco. With runners at second and third and one retired, Garabez Rosa slashed a ball to the right side that skidded off of the glove of Ducks second baseman Todd Hankins and a run was home.

Rosa represented the tying run as second baseman Corban Joseph drove home the second run with a sac fly to left field. Shortstop Adrian Marin then laced a single to left moving Rosa to second representing the tying run.

Centerfielder Glynn Davis then grounded out to third base to end the ballgame. The two-run rally had fallen just short.

Akron grabbed the lead in the sixth inning with two down. Ducks right fielder Clint Frazier hit a two-strike off-speed pitch for a two-run home run to left field. The following batter Bryson Myles tripled into the alley in left-center. The throw to third grazed off of Myles helmet and deflected away. Myles took advantage racing home to make it 3-0 Akron.

Baysox starter Joe Gunkel (0-2) was extremely sharp early. Gunkel retired 11 in a row to start the game and 12 of the first 13 faced. Donnie Hart and Bobby Bundy provided scoreless relief following Gunkel’s steady effort.

The Baysox fall to 1-6 with the defeat. They have dropped all four games to Akron this season.
