Children’s Theatre of Annapolis presents a musical production of the classic tale “Sleeping Beauty,” performed by kids ages 8 – 14. The show will run April 15 – 24, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30, and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 PM, at the CTA Theatre complex at 1661 Bay Head Road, in Annapolis. The 2 PM show on Saturday, April 16, will be a Sensory Friendly production and will be American Sign Language interpreted. Tickets are available by calling 410-757-2281 or cta.ticketleap.com.
The musical starts with an introduction to the kingdom, led by King Stefan, played by Andrew Wilson, a homeschooled student, age 8, and Queen Olivia played by Claire Hatcher, a Broadneck High School student, age 15. They have everything that they could want, the only thing missing, a child, an heir. The good fairies grant them their wish, all seems well as they welcome their daughter, beautiful Briar Rose, played Heidi Thiessen, a 12 year old student at Annapolis Area Christian School. In their haste to celebrate, they left out a divisive, but powerful member of the Kingdom, Wisteria, played by Camille White, age 14, of Broadneck High School. To retaliate, Wisteria places a curse on the unsuspecting child; that she will prick her finger on a briar rose, and die. Will this evil plan work? What will happen to Briar Rose? This timeless, beautiful tale is a story of a parent’s love, the curiosity of a child, and love triumphing over evil.
“Sleeping Beauty” is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to live musical theatre. Little princes and princesses are encouraged to wear their fancy dress, as they would when visiting any royal kingdom.
