The Baysox fell 4-3 Wednesday afternoon to the Erie SeaWolves to drop the three-game home series. The matchup featured Bowie starter LHP Jayson Aquino, who was making his first career start in the Orioles system.
The game’s first runs came courtesy of Bowie in the bottom of the second inning. OF Garabez Rosa gave the Baysox their first early lead of the young season with a two-run home run blasted off of Erie starter Cory Riordan. Prior to Rosa’s home run, DH Chance Sisco reached on a single line drive to right field.
The SeaWolves came right back to tie the game in the top of the third inning. OF Connor Harrell hit a lead-off single to left field and got to third safely on a C Tim Remes double to left field. SS Gustavo Nunez grounded out to score Harrell. INF Tyler Bortnick followed with a single to center field to tie the score at 2-2.
Erie captured the lead in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a lead-off bunt single by Nunez and a double to left field by Bortnick for his second RBI on the day. Bortnick also scored on a sacrifice fly ball of the bat of DH Dean Green to make Erie’s lead 4-2.
The Baysox tried to recapture the magic of Monday’s comeback win and mount a similar rally late in the ball game. In the bottom of the seventh, 1B Trey Mancini hit his fourth home run of the season on the first pitch he saw from Riordan to cut the Erie lead to 4-3. However, that was the last time the Baysox threatened in the game.
Aquino threw five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four in the loss. Baysox reliever LHP Ashur Tolliver was impressive again as he notched three scoreless innings, following Aquino, allowed two hits and struck out five batters. Reliever RHP Jason Stoffel also pitched a scoreless frame for the Baysox and struck out two. Even in the defeat, Baysox pitchers did not issue a walk all game coming after a season-high 10 walks the night before against the SeaWolves.
The Baysox season-opening six game homestand concluded with a 4-3 loss to bring them to 1-5 on the season. Bowie looks to get back on the winning track as they travel to Akron and Erie for seven games before returning home Thursday, April 21 to play the Harrisburg Senators to kick off another seven game homestand.
