Need another Mexican choice in Annapolis? Chipotle will soon be coming to Market Space in the space currently occupied by Hard Bean Cafe.
When Chipotle first applied, rival and neighbor, Moe’s Southwest Grill challenged it through the City Board of Appeals and subsequently Circuit Court. The initial challenge was dismissed because the court was not going to rule on competition. A subsequent challenge was filed claiming that Chipotle is a fast food restaurant and not a restaurant. Fast food restaurants are not allowed in the Annapolis Historic District.
Yesterday the State of Maryland’s highest court, the Court of Appeals ruled that the lower court ruling would stand and that the challenge was more about eliminating a competitor than anything else
Chipotle has not indicated when the store might open.
