Baysox offense prevails despite defensive woes

Baysox 2016After the Baysox saw their four-game winning streak snapped, Bowie responded with a win in their first game of their seven-game homestand. Three Home Runs provided the offensive jolt needed to give Bowie the 6-4 win in their series opener versus Harrisburg.

Defense, once again, was an issue for the Baysox Thursday night as an error led to a first inning run for the Senators against Baysox starter RHP David Hess.  INF Rafael Bautista hit a lead-off single to center field and stole second base before Wilmer Difo drew a walk. With one out, DH Neftali Soto reached on a fielding error that allowed Bautista to score and give Harrisburg an early 1-0 lead.

OF Mike Yastrzemski tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to right field against Harrisburg starter RHP Reynaldo Lopez. Harrisburg would not be deterred and picked up another error-aided run in the top of the second inning. Zach Collier hit a lead-off single to right field and scored after a throwing error by 2B Corban Joseph as INF Stephen Perez reached via fielder’s choice.

INF Chris Bostick gave the Senators a 3-1 lead with a solo home run of his own to left field in the top of the third inning. However, The Baysox tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning. OF Julio Borbon hit a lead-off single to right field and Yastrzemski followed up with his second home run of the night on a line drive to right field to tie the game. The home runs were the first two of the season for Yastrzemski and it marked the third multi-home run game of his career.

The game was not tied for long, the Senators took the lead right back in the top of the fourth inning. Perez hit a one-out single to left field and scored on an  Adrian Sanchez double to left field to make the score 4-3 Senators.

Bowie took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh frame against Harrisburg reliever LHP Nick Lee. Glynn Davis hit a lead-off single to left field but had  to wait until a two-out home run from Trey Mancini drove him home to help the Baysox take a 5-4 lead.

For good measure, the Baysox added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Harrisburg reliever RHP Wander Suero. Joseph hit a one-out single to left field and INF Jeff Kemp followed with a double down the left field line that scored  Joseph and  made the score 6-4.

Hess threw six innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out three and walking one in a no decision. Reliever RHP Stefan Crichton followed Hess with two perfect innings, striking out one to earn the win. Closer Jason Stoffel came into the game in the ninth and shut down the Senator hitters, recorded two strikeouts to end the game and earn him his third save.

Harrisburg reliever Lee was credited with the loss. He threw two innings, allowed two hits and two runs while striking out for Bowie batters

RHP Parker Bridwell (0-0, 6.48) takes the mound for Bowie on Friday as the team plays the second game in a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators. He will be opposed by top Nationals pitching prospect RHP Lucas Giolito (0-1, 1.17)
