St. John’s defeats navy 3-2 in the 34th Annapolis Cup (PHOTOS)

While Army and the Corps of Cadets at the US Military Academy in West Point have not quite figured out how to bet Navy, the Johnnies at St. John’s have. Going into yesterday’s croquet match, the Johnnies had won for 26 of the last 33 matches. Yesterday, they notched number 28 defeating Navy 3-2.

One of the highlights of the match is the debut of the St. John’s “uniform.” While the Naval Academy plays in traditional dress whites, the Johnnies are anything but. In years past they have been vikings, Waldos from the Where’s Waldo series, vikings, mad scientists, and one year even dressed like Navy.  This year, the team emerged from Woodward Hall as Amish farmers, seemingly direct from Lancaster!

But at times, croquet seems to be a minor detail of what has become dubbed Annapolis’ Largest Cocktail Party. Nearly 5000 people flooded the Great Lawn at St John’s College to mix, mingle, dance, and….well, since this is Annapolis…drink. The catch? Most everyone dresses to the nines as if they are on Jay Gatsby’s estate in West Egg in 1922.

And from here, the photos will tell the story of the Annapolis Cup–2016.
