Crash, hazmat snarls traffic on Route 3 in Gambrills

Route 3 HazmatThree people were injured, and southbound Route 3 in Gambrills closed for more than six hours following an auto accident early Monday morning. Around 6:20 a.m. firefighters responded to a reported auto accident involving a tractor trailer and a garbage truck on the southbound lanes of Route 3 between Route 32 and Route 175.

While firefighters were responding, additional callers advised that there was a driver trapped.

Firefighters arrived and found a two vehicle accident. One vehicle, a tractor trailer carrying 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel had left the roadway and traveled down an approximately 50-foot embankment. Firefighters found the driver trapped and an active leak of diesel fuel at a rate of approximately 20 gallons per minute.

Firefighters worked simultaneously to extricate the driver while also protecting him and themselves from possible ignition of the product while also attempting to contain the product from reaching the Severn Run, a tributary of the Severn River.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 45-year-old male, was extricated in about 30 minutes. He was transported by paramedics to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life threatening. The driver was the only occupant of the tractor-trailer. The 41-year-old female driver of the garbage truck was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries, and a 28-year-old male passenger of was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center, also with minor injuries.

Firefighters with the assistance of personnel from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) worked through the morning to contain the diesel fuel. MDE officials successfully offloaded approximately 7,300 gallons of product from the tanker. By 11:30 a.m. both the tractor and trailer had been removed from the ravine and returned to the roadway. The scene was turned over to the MDE and contractors for the trucking company.

Route 3 south was reopened to traffic just after 1:00 p.m.

MDE officials determined that approximately 700 gallons of diesel leaked from the truck but it had not reached the Severn Run.
