AYC adds classes at Dock Street Clubhouse

aycIn an effort to extend the appeal of its racing events to a broader spectrum of sailors, the coming sailing season sees modifications to two longstanding Annapolis Yacht Club regattas in the form of additional classes. These new classes will create opportunities for boats that are not typically part of the racing fleet and are designed to be attractive for sailors who are not frequent racers.

This year, AYC will feature Cruising Spinnaker, Cruising Non-Spinnaker, Shorthanded Spinnaker, and Shorthanded Non-Spinnaker starts at its 80th Annual Regatta (June 11, 2016) and again at its Fall Series Distance Race (October 8, 2016). Each of the AYC races will feature a government mark course with a fixed course published in advance.

AYC aims to make it as easy as possible to get on the starting line. A pre-requisite for participation in these events is a PHRF rating for each boat. The process of obtaining a PHRF rating will be greatly simplified and accelerated via a Workshop set for Saturday, April 2, at the Dock Street Clubhouse.

The Workshop will be led by a group of sailors who will work with each boat owner to complete their PHRF rating application at the event. Copies of the rating applications will be on hand along with the US Sailing database which includes much of the pertinent information for most production sailboats. Owners are asked to bring along any boat specifications they have, sail inventory details, and a check for $25 payable to “PHRF of the Chesapeake.” Owners should be able to walk out of the Workshop with the application complete and the expectation of receiving a valid PHRF rating certificate soon thereafter.

In addition to the AYC races, this PHRF rating certificate can also be used with entry into other 2016 racing events that may offer Cruising and PHRF Non-Spinnaker starts, such as the Hospice Cup, the Leukemia Cup, the Annapolis Labor Day Regatta, and the Boatyard Bar & Grill CRAB Regatta.

The PHRF Workshop will be in the Skipjack at AYC, 12 Dock Street at 1100 on April 2, 2016. Pre-registration is requested, please contact the Annapolis Yacht Club Front Desk (410) 263-9279.
