Baltimore Business Journal names ASO a top arts organization in the area

Annapolis Symphony OrchestraThe Annapolis Symphony Orchestra was ranked #17 by the Baltimore Business Journal in its annual list of the top 20 arts organizations in the Baltimore region.

The only other orchestra on the list is the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The BSO’s average ticket price is $79 per patron, compared to $44 for the Annapolis Symphony.

Founded in 1961, The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is the largest arts organization in Anne Arundel County. With an annual budget of $1.3 million and 70 professional musicians, the Symphony has an attendance of about 20,000 patrons per year and performs 24 concerts per year, including appearances with the Annapolis Opera and the United States Naval Academy Glee Clubs. The Symphony offers a free Pops in the Park concert each Labor Day weekend at Quiet Waters Park, and offers educational programs through partnership with local schools.

After a much-applauded March 6 concert at the Strathmore Music Center, the Annapolis Capital called the Annapolis Symphony “far more accomplished and proficient than you would expect in a compact town within easy driving distance of two major … prestigious orchestras.” The Capital further praised the Symphony as “a major asset to this community, and one whose reach should continue to expand.”

The Symphony’s Maryland Hall concerts have all been sold out, or nearly so, this season, but a few tickets remain for performances on April 1-2 and May 6-7.

Concerts on Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2 feature renowned British pianist Michael Roll and works by Schumann, Beethoven, Ives, and Schubert.

Concerts on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, feature works by Smetana, Fung, Britten, and Franck.

Both sets of concerts take place at 8:00 PM at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase St., Annapolis.

Music Director Jose-Luis Novo will announce the 2016-17 season at a reception for major donors on April 22. Subscriptions will available for renewal in May and on sale to the general public in June.
