Alex, who was selected for the program by the Maryland State Department of Education, will join Matthew Saxton of Sykesville as a delegate in the program’s 54th annual Washington Week, set for March 5-12. The program aims to help students increase their knowledge and understanding of the American political process and help develop a lifelong commitment to public service.

“I have been fascinated with public service, government, and politics from a young age,” Alex said. “I am extremely excited to have an opportunity to see the federal government up close this March.”

Just 104 students from across the nation are selected for the intensive weeklong study of the federal government. Transportation and all expenses are provided by the Hearst Foundations. In addition, the Hearst Foundations provide each student with a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs.

Alex is first vice president of the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils. He is active in Model United Nations, and a member of the Superintendent George Arlotto’s Teen Advisory Committee. As an Eagle Scout, he completed an award-winning service project to promote youth literacy. He also is a USA Water Polo Junior Olympian.

Alex hopes to study political science and become an attorney.
