Hospice expands ‘Courageous Conversations’ to Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties

After two successful rounds last year in Annapolis and Severna Park,  Hospice of the Chesapeake will expand its free educational series of community discussions, Courageous Conversations. The spring 2016 series begins March 31 and will offer seven sessions, with three at the Annapolis Regional Library and four at locations in Prince George’s County.

The series is designed to share information, provide helpful tools and provoke thought for families facing the prospect of difficult choices and conversations around end of life. Courageous Conversations is an initiative of The John & Cathy Belcher Institute for Complex Illness Care, which Hospice of the Chesapeake seeks to make a national leader in positive and transformational change in the fields of advanced complex illness and end-of-life care.

Each session will be facilitated by Hospice of the Chesapeake professionals. The spring 2016 schedule is as follows:

“Safe Passages: Navigating Options in the Face of Serious Illness” – A discussion on how to make choices with hospice and palliative care.

  • 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 31 – Presented by Business Liaison Deidre Wall and Volunteer Coordinator Allison Kuchar, at the Prince George’s County Public Library South Bowie Branch, 15301 Hall Road, Bowie. 
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 4 – Presented by Dr. David Wu and Business Liaison Renee Bland at the Anne Arundel County Public Library Annapolis Regional Library, 1410 West St, Annapolis. 

“The Best Ending Ever: Having the Conversation” – A discussion on how to start important family conversations about planning for the end of life.      

  • 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 11 – Presented by Dr. Martin Weltz and Mary Ann Bleeke, LCSW at the Annapolis Regional Library.
  • 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 14 – Presented by Business Liaison Karen Bryant at the Prince George’s County Camp Springs Senior Activities Center, 6420 Allentown Road, Temple Hills. 

“Conversations of Hope:  Exploring Spirituality at a time of Advanced Illness” – A discussion on the disparity in the use of hospice services by African-Americans and strategies to overcome barrier.

  • 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 3 – Presented by the Rev. Brandon Brewer, Chaplain, and Business Liaison Jessica Talley at South Bowie Branch Library.        

“Growing through Grief: What the Sacred Sorrow of Grief Can Teach Us” –             A discussion on what “normal” grieving is and how to give and receive help.

  • 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 2 – Presented by Grief Counselor, Roberta Rook, LCPC, at the South Bowie Branch Library.            
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 13 – Presented by Clinical Specialist Susan Coale, LCSW-C, and the Rev. Janie Blakely, Chaplain, at the Annapolis Regional Library.
