John Brancy, baritone, and Peter Dugan, piano, will perform “Songs of the Great War” at St. John’s College. The concert, which is free and open to public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, February 12 at 8 p.m.
This program pays tribute to the World War One Centennial and unites songs by British, German, French, and American composers whose lives and music were influenced by World War I. The music sums up the heartbreaking difference between the world at the century’s beginning and the unprecedented destruction of 1914–1918, when the first fully mechanized conflict in human history changed the shape of the world. Composers include Debussy, Ravel, Butterworth, Orff, Ives, Poulenc, and others.
The New York Times hails John Brancy as “a dashing, strong-voiced baritone,” and the Baltimore Sun describes Peter Dugan’s piano as “spellbinding.” Brancy is the 2013 winner of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition. Dugan has appeared as a soloist throughout the United States, including performances in New York’s Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, and Philadelphia’s Academy of Music and Verizon Hall.
