AACC’s Felton honored as Black History Hero

James A. Felton III is Anne Arundel Community College’s inaugural Chief Diversity Officer.

James A. Felton III, chief diversity officer at Anne Arundel Community College, was selected as a Black History Hero by the Md. Washington Minority Companies Association as part of the Maryland Live! Casino’s Black History Month Celebration.

The award will be presented at the celebration Feb. 25 at the Ram’s Head Center Stage at Maryland Live! Casino at Arundel Mills, 7002 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover. The event begins with networking at 6:30 p.m., with the program at 7 p.m., followed by a live band featuring “A Tribute to James Brown.”

Felton was chosen for his significant contributions to the community. Felton works with minority businesses through his work with county chambers of commerce. He also serves as a member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast Committee that plans an annual breakfast to recognize community members who are carrying on King’s legacy of service and social justice. Since Felton became the college’s first chief diversity officer in 2014, the college has won three national equity and diversity awards through his expansion of some college diversity programs and initiation of others. Felton has presented more than 100 workshops and presentations on leadership and diversity; coordinated national scholarship and mentor programs for underrepresented students; partnered with corporate, federal agencies and nonprofit organizations to promote programs on diversity and social justice; and worked on numerous strategic and campus diversity plans.
