Coping with grief through drumming

HospiceSometimes, when teenagers are frustrated, angry, confused or inconsolable, they just want to hit something. Josh Robinson gives them permission to wail away.

Robinson will be leading “Language of Drumming,” from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 12 at Chesapeake Life Center the John & Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD.  The free workshop is made possible by the Kathy and Jerry Wood Foundation so that grieving teens can learn some coping mechanisms in a fun and creative way.

“From my own experience there are only so many things you can hit and produce a positive result,” Robinson said. “Drumming can be used as a tool to teach an array of life skills. It provides a positive and creative outlet for young people to express themselves and release their emotions in a safe space.”

Robinson has worked with grieving children through the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, The Moyer Foundation and the National Alliance for Grieving Children. “Drumming has helped me heal from loss, process challenges and express myself beyond the limits of words,” he said.

During the workshop, youth ages 13 to 18 can take part in drumming activities, build a drum of their own and finish off with a jam session. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by calling 1.888.591.7077 or visiting www.chesapeakelifecenter.org.
