Continuing in his effort to reform public safety and bring efficient communication to county government, Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh today named Kevin Aftung as Anne Arundel County Emergency Management Director, a new cabinet level appointment.
“Now more than ever, we need to ensure a quick and effective response to any emergency in Anne Arundel County,” said Schuh. “Kevin brings the knowledge and experience needed to ensure that we will be ready for any challenge.”
As Emergency Management Director, Aftung will oversee the day to day operations of the County’s Emergency Operations Center, which helps coordinate responses to weather related emergencies and other disasters.
Through recent legislation, the Emergency Management Director is now an at-will position that will report to the Chief Administrative Officer to ensure effective and efficient communication in the event of an emergency. Previously, the Director had been a merit employee of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
From 2007 until 2015, Aftung was Director of the Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services, where he managed a staff of 103, 5 EMS stations, and annual budget of $8 million. Prior to his service in Queen Anne’s County, he served 30 years with the Howard County Fire and Rescue Department.
Aftung’s appointment is effective immediately.
