Navy basketball, Annapolis police, and Blackwall Hitch–odd combination?

pristoop popeThirty children and adults, a kid-friendly buffet of chicken tenders with mac & cheese and a Navy basketball game- all perfect ingredients for an afternoon of food and fun, and the launch of a community outreach initiative by the Annapolis Police Department (APD).

Saturday the APD hosted a community event, inviting local children ages 7-15 to come to the Taylor Avenue station, enjoy lunch courtesy of Blackwall Hitch and accompany officers to the Navy-Holy Cross basketball game, with tickets from the US Naval Academy Athletics Department.

Chef Zachary Pope of Blackwall Hitch (400 Sixth Street, Annapolis), prepared the food and attended the lunch.

“It was fantastic meeting the kids,” Chef Pope said. “I had great conversations with several young people interested in careers in the restaurant industry. I applaud Chief Pristoop and the Annapolis Police Department for starting this community outreach program and look forward to partnering with them in future events.”

In remarks released by the APD, Chief Michael Pristoop indicated that more activities are on tap for this calendar year.

“This is an opportunity for the community and kids to see our officers in a different light,” Chef Pristoop said. “This is the first of many events we are planning for the City’s youth in 2016.”
