George Russell, St. John’s College tutor, will investigate the political mind of Abraham Lincoln in the lecture “Was the Civil War Unjust and Lincoln’s Death Deserved? (A Consideration of Secession, Perpetual Enslavement, and Union in Lincoln’s Political Thought)” at St. John’s College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, January 22 at 8 p.m. A question period will follow.
Russell’s lecture takes as its starting point, claims that the war was avoidable and had its chief sources in peculiar motivations of Lincoln regarding enslavement and the Union. The lecture seeks to explore alternative explanations in Lincoln’s political thought, particularly in his “First Inaugural Address,” his “Cooper Institute Address,” and his “Address to the Young Men’s Lyceum.”
Russell earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College, and his master’s and doctorate degrees from the Catholic University of America. He joined the faculty at St. John’s College in 1995.
