On Saturday, December 19, 2015 at approximately 1:36 a.m., Anne Arundel County Police Northern District Officers responded to the 100 block of Homewood Road, Linthicum Heights, Maryland for a police involved shooting. An off duty Baltimore City Police Officer reported he was in the area of the 100 block of Homewood Road when he was approached by a male. The male announced a robbery and produced a handgun. The off duty officer, an 18 year veteran assigned to the Special Operations Section, was able to retrieve his departmental service weapon and fired at the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and collapsed in the street a short distance from the location of the attempted robbery. Medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the subject as being deceased.
Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Detectives along with the Baltimore Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team responded to the scene. Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit assumed command of the investigation and searched the crime scene as Evidence Technicians collected items of evidentiary value. Preliminary statements and evidence collected at the crime scene indicate that the male, identified as Edel Cato Moreland, a thirty-two (32) year old male with no fixed address, approached the off duty Baltimore City Police Officer who was not in uniform. Moreland announced a robbery and produced a handgun. The officer was able to retrieve his service weapon and fired at the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and collapsed a short distance from the scene. The suspect’s gun was recovered from the scene by evidence technicians. It was determined to be a realistic looking all black toy gun resembling a revolver.
Moreland suffered from apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical professionals. The body of Edel Moreland was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner located in Baltimore Maryland for and autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
