Midshipman named Mitchell Scholarship recipient

USNASealMidshipman 1st Class (senior) Allyson Strachan, 21, of Hebron, Maine, was recently named as the Naval Academy’s 6th recipient of a Mitchell Scholarship. This highly-competitive academic scholarship provides one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Strachan is an Honors Systems Engineering major at the academy with an interest in prosthetics. She is the captain of the academy’s Women’s Ice Hockey team and served as battalion commander for the academy’s STEM camp, responsible for 1,000 campers from across the United States. She spent the last two summers interning at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in the Research and Exploratory Development Department working on projects involving phantom limb stimulation and neurologically controlled prosthetics. Strachan will train as a Navy pilot after completion of her Master of Science degree in Biomedical, Audio and Image Signal Processing at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

 “The Naval Academy is proud that Midshipman 1st Class Ally Strachan has been selected for the Mitchell Scholarship,” said Naval Academy Academic Dean And Provost Dr. Andrew Phillips. “She has excelled in every way in a demanding academic and military environment, and this achievement is well-deserved. I’m sure she will continue to excel while at the Dublin Institute of Technology, and I look forward to following her career in the Fleet.”

The Mitchell Scholars Program is a nation-wide, competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance and is named to honor former U.S. Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process. The scholarship is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership a commitment to public service and community. Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 were chosen for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.
