First Presbyterian Church presents Christmas Cantata

christmastreeThe Chancel Choir at the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis will perform John Rutter’s “Gloria” as its Christmas Cantata at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. church services on Dec. 13, in the church sanctuary at 171 Duke of Gloucester St.

The choir, led by Robert W. Muckenfuss, director of music and organist at the church, will be accompanied by a 10-piece brass and percussion ensemble. Muckenfuss called “Gloria” one of Rutter’s most endearing choral works. The three-movement piece was composed in 1974 for chorus, brass and percussion expressing the message of the angels, “Glory to god in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.”

Music also will play a big role in the church’s Christmas Eve services. The schedule includes:

  • 4 p.m. – Worship with the toddler in mind (about 20 minutes).
  • 5:30 p.m. – Worship featuring the church’s children’s choirs, lessons and carols.
  • 8:30 p.m. –Chancel Choir and soloists lead a program of Christmas music, followed by a 9 p.m. candlelight communion service with the Chancel Choir, lessons and carols.

The public is invited to all events.
