The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues (CODI) held the 2015 Disability Awareness Day on October 24th, 2015, at Westfield Annapolis Mall.  County Executive Steve Schuh presented the 2015 DAD Award and an Executive Citation to Honoree, Cisco Nochera.  Businesses and individuals were also awarded Executive Citations for their lifelong commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities.

To further Anne Arundel County’s role in awareness, County Executive Schuh created the Executive Order 81 for all County departments to designate an ADA Liaison.  He announced and signed the Order in the presence of CODI Chairman, Joelle Ridgeway, and the Director of the Department of Aging and Disabilities, Pamela Jordan.  Liaisons will be trained by the ADA Coordinator to familiarize themselves with history of the law current requirements.  They will share information, create awareness, and strive for compliance to reduce and eliminate barriers to access and recommend appropriate remediation within their organization.

“Disability Awareness Day is a great opportunity for Anne Arundel County citizens to gain knowledge on disability issues and understand the importance of it,” said County Executive Steve Schuh.

“In partnership with the Commission on Disability Issues and the ADA Coordinator, the ADA Liaisons will be able to assist in keeping our communities well informed of the requirements and help in spreading awareness for individuals with disabilities,” Pamela Jordan .

The public also visited with over 25 exhibitors who provide services to individuals with disabilities.  Hands for Harmony sign language choir provided entertainment and Canine Companions performed a demonstration.
