Activist Kevin Powell to keynote annual MLK Memorial Breakfast

Kevin Powell, author of 11 books and speaker and activist on education, civic engagement, leadership and culture, is the keynote speaker for the 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on Jan. 18, in the David S. Jenkins Gymnasium on Anne Arundel Community College’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., with the program beginning promptly at 8 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring canned goods to donate to the county food bank.

Nationally known speaker, author and activist, Kevin Powell, will deliver the keynote address at this year’ 35th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 18, in the David S. Jenkins Gymnasium on Anne Arundel Community College’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway.

The theme of this year’s breakfast is “In the Face of Adversity, We March On!” Doors open at 7:30 a.m., with the breakfast beginning promptly at 8 a.m. As in prior years, participants are asked to bring canned goods to be donated to the county’s Food Bank.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Committee, which organizes the annual event, wanted to bring in someone with a national reputation on this anniversary year. Powell’s writings and speeches focus on major issues of the day as they relate to politics, culture and literature. He has written 11 books about people who have made a difference, from Dr. King to Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama. His latest book is a memoir of his difficult life growing up in poverty in New Jersey, “The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood.” In addition, his articles have appeared in such publications as CNN.com, Rolling Stone, ESPN.com, Esquire, Ebony, The Huffington Post, The Guardian and Vibe magazine, where he worked for many years as a senior writer. He also is the president and co-founder of BK Nation, a national, progressive, multicultural organization focused on such issues as education, civic engagement, leadership training, health and wellness, social media, arts and culture, and job and small business creation.
