ThanksgivingserviceAnne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh and Annapolis City Mayor Mike Pantelides this week encouraged all citizens to volunteer their time this holiday season to help the less fortunate.

“Thanksgiving and the holiday season provide unique opportunities for citizens to volunteer and help those who are less fortunate,” said Schuh. “I encourage all citizens of Anne Arundel County to take time and serve their neighbors.”

“Thanksgiving is about expressing gratitude and giving thanks,” said Pantelides. “The best way to do that is by giving back to the community through not just words but through action. “

The County Executive and Mayor spent Monday evening volunteering at the annual Stanton Center Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by We Care and Friends, a local nonprofit that assists with food, housing, clothing, drug treatment, family counseling, and employment for Annapolis and Anne Arundel County citizens.

For almost 20 years on the Monday before Thanksgiving, We Care and Friends serves up to 3,000 Thanksgiving dinners at the Stanton Community Center in Annapolis to people who are homeless or in need. Meals are also delivered to people in the community who cannot travel beyond their homes. The event offers the opportunity for people to enjoy dinner and entertainment with family, friends and members of the community.

The Thanksgiving event involves hundreds of local volunteers and numerous donations by area restaurants and organizations.
