What to do if a drunk college kid breaks into your house at night

[do action=”fringe”/]

burglaryWith the heroin epidemic hitting Anne Arundel County especially hard of late, a drunken college student breaking into your house to have sex is probably the last thing on a little old grandmother’s mind. Right?  Well, it did happen. A 20-year old college student was discovered inside a woman’s apartment this weekend after a night out drinking. So, what to do?

Most burglars who break-in to homes are out for cash, laptops or jewelry. This wasn’t the case for a frisky 20-year old who was arrested Sunday morning in Annapolis for breaking-in to a 74 year old woman’s unlocked garden-style apartment and having sex with a woman he met at a downtown bar.  The grandmother woke up to the him sleeping on her couch.

What should you do to protect yourself during a burglary?

Prevention – Prevent a burglar from ever entering your home in the first place.

  1. Try to prevent the burglary in the first place. Most burglars break-in to either the front door or the back door. Make sure you have a strong door in place with adequate locks–and lock them.
  2. Use motion sensor lights to scare away potential intruders.
  3. Keep a light on in common areas if you fear a break-in.
  4. Use a security system. These are dropping in price as technology continually innovates.
  5. Do not leave cash, credit cards, wallets, purses, electronics or laptops in plain view of an open window.

Adaption – If you hear a burglar, adapt to the situation.

  1. Be calm.
  2. Call 911.
  3. Get into a non-obvious hiding place if you hear the burglar approaching.
  4. Be careful – Many petty burglars are stealing because they need the money for drug use. The burglars might not be rational and could become aggressive instead of being scared off by your movements or threats.
  5. Use a weapon as a last resort. You do not know whether or not the burglar has a lethal weapon or could harm you.

What should you do if you wake up drunk on a 74-year olds couch after breaking into a house and having sex with a woman?

Basically the opposite of what this guy did. Don’t tell them you broke into a random house. Don’t tell them you had sex with a girl in the aforementioned random house and certainly don’t tell them you were drinking at a bar when you are only 20 years old. Just be quiet and call an Attorney.
