Nancy Hammond 2015 PosterTraditions have sturdy roots in the Old Line State. From the “burning of the socks” in Annapolis to the lighting of the Washington Monument in Baltimore, traditions are both unifying and celebratory.

Every year, that is exactly what Nancy Hammond’s Annual Poster Event in the state capital does: it brings together themes familiar to the Chesapeake region while, for one fall Saturday, people who love both a great tradition, and inspired art, convivially meet and wait in line for a piece of history.  At 10AM, Saturday, October 24, 2015, Nancy Hammond Editions, 192 West Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401 will release the limited edition, signed and numbered, for $75 per poster. This is a one-day, in-store-only price. The price of the edition increases the next day, Sunday, October 25, to $200 and will continue to increase as the edition sells.  Phone and Internet orders will be taken beginning on Sunday.

This year’s poster, Tote Boat, takes iconic images from Maryland – both modern and colonial, maritime and ‘landlubbing,’ and incorporates them into a single, mighty mast – a Chesapeake totem pole.  From deck to boom to spreaders, the essential essence of every region is represented. From Maryland’s own Chesapeake Bay Retriever in Eastern Shore camouflage to the spicy, almighty crab, who brings our senses to life, center stage. Boys with lacrosse sticks, the mighty blue heron and a colonial garbed female, inspired by the historical guides rounding corners in Annapolis, suddenly, delightfully, emerging from another century, are “carved” into the totem becoming the essential symbol Maryland.

“The primitive style of this poster is drawn from the wooden signs of the shopkeepers in the time of George Washington,” says Nancy Hammond. “General Washington crossed our Bay many times en route to Philadelphia from Mt. Vernon. It is an inspiration that served me well in developing this year’s poster theme.”

Omnipresent on both shores are the yellow and black retrievers along with a skipper, head to toe in foul weather gear scanning the Bay’s horizon, and the crab, emblematic of the underwater bounty of the Bay and the gustatory pleasures of picking, hammering and more picking.

An addition to this year’s Annual Poster Event is that a portion of the day’s proceeds will be donated to The Light House, a homeless prevention support center in Annapolis.

“I’m always surprised and delighted that the poster release is such a highly anticipated, – apparently ‘not-to-be-missed – fun event,” says Ms. Hammond. “But more than that, the poster event is a barometer telling us the importance that art plays in our lives. That for one small moment, a neighborhood gallery with far-flung admirers, unites strangers on a sidewalk, all in the quest to bring beauty and art into their lives. I’d say that’s pretty significant.”

Tote Boat is the 15th edition of the Nancy Hammond collection of annual posters, a tradition which began in 1997 with Chesapeake Noah’s Ark when Ms. Hammond’s first shop was located on State Circle. When the Millennial year 2000 poster was released lines began forming the day before and all through the night. The area was peppered with sterno stoves, sleeping bags, beach chairs and blankets with dogs on leashes and children sleeping in cars.

Nancy Hammond has produced many limited edition fine art prints. All her limited edition giclées and silkscreens are printed on 100% archival paper, and signed and numbered by the artist. In her home studio, many works progress simultaneously. Crayons, acrylic paint, glue and a myriad of colorful paper scraps that carpet the floor are evidence of her favorite working medium, cut paper.

Nancy Hammond majored in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has since been chosen to be exhibited in galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Maryland Institute of Art. Nancy Hammond Editions is located at 192 West Street in Annapolis, Maryland and online at www.NancyHammondEditions.com
