On Friday, October 23 at 8 pm enjoy Beethoven’s Jazz with the Lenny Marcus Trio as classical and jazz influences are brought together in the setting of Beethoven masterpieces. You’ll also hear jazz from New Orleans where Lenny studied piano with Ellis Marsalis while playing in the French Quarter. Original Marcus compositions will also be showcased.  Joining Lenny Marcus are Rick Eckberg on bass and Wes Crawford on drums.  This concert is part of the 4th Friday Concert Series held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 333 Dubois Road in Annapolis. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more information, visit www.tinyurl.com/UUCA-concerts or call 410-266-8044 Monday through Thursday.

The Jazz of Beethoven album has received rave reviews from both Jazz Times and Cadence magazine and was showcased at Blues Alley as has the composer’s latest album Peace for Beethoven, a companion album. Marcus said “If Beethoven knew jazz he might compose like this.” Lenny’s music goes from modern high energy to a more contemplative, meditative approach.

Marcus has recorded 22 albums, performed in several international jazz festivals, and his original melodies and harmonic counterpoints have been featured on radio and TV, including placements on CNN’s Hero’s series, the National Weather Channel, NPR’s All that Jazz and All Songs Considered.  His album Sun Ray, a tribute to his first piano teacher Ray Bryant, reached #4 for radio airplay in the USA/Canada in 2012 and was listed as #9 in the top 50 Jazz albums of 2012 by Jazz Times magazine contributor Owen Cordle.

Rick Eckberg on bass has performed and recorded with the Lenny Marcus Trio for several years.  An Eastman School of Music double bass grad he has appeared with jazz artists including Rosemary Clooney and Dakota Staton and plays in the Durham, N.C. Symphony.  Wes Crawford on drums has performed and recorded in a variety of popular styles with many artists including saxophonist Ron Holloway and singing legend Eva Cassidy.  He also performs with the David Bach Consort.

This program is part of a ticketed Brian Ganz and Friends concert series offered monthly on the 4th Friday at 8 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis (UUCA). A Friday Five Pack ticket ($12 per concert) can be obtained at the door for $60. The fall season continues on November 27 with Time Travel from the ancient temples of Indonesia to the brothels of South America featuring Karen Johnson (flute) and Manny Arciniega (percussion).  See www.tinyurl.com/UUCA-concerts for future programming.
