A deep dive into acoustic blues with Eleanor Ellis

333coffeehouseThe 333 Coffeehouse, Annapolis’ monthly listening space for folk and acoustic music, is pleased to present Eleanor Ellis and her performer guests.

Eleanor Ellis is a soulful interpreter of blues traditions. She sings in a rich alto, accompanying herself with skill on the guitar. Her repertoire spans a wide range of acoustic blues styles, which she shows off with a highly personal spirit.

For this performance Eleanor will be joined by harmonica player Pearl Bailes (a frequent collaborator), and Annapolis blues guitarist Neil Harpe will also make a guest appearance.

Eleanor Ellis has been a linchpin in the D.C. blues scene for many years. A native of Louisiana, she moved to Washington in the 1970s and became immersed in the city’s lively Piedmont blues revival. She was a founder of the D.C. Blues Society and of the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation. She has played with a long list of blues luminaries from the DC area and nearby. She traveled and played with the late gospel street singer Flora Molton and bluesman Archie Edwards, and sometimes accompanied Delta Blues great Eugene Powell. She has performed at festivals across the United States and in Europe.

Eleanor has become a dedicated scholar of the blues. She has written for several publications and produced the documentary film Blues Houseparty. She has also worked at the Archive of New Orleans Jazz at Tulane University in New Orleans, and at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Eleanor Ellis has recorded two solo CDs, as well as two with Flora Molton and one with Andy Cohen and Bill Ellis. She is recording a new solo CD for a 2016 release.

Additionally, this concert will feature the awards ceremony for the annual Fred B. Benjamin Peace Writing Contest, a statewide essay contest for middle schoolers sponsored by Anne Arundel Peace Action (http://www.mdpeaceaction.org/). Winners will receive their awards and read excerpts from their winning essays.
