County Executive Schuh kayaks in County waterways

schuh kayaksLate last month, County Executive Steve Schuh, Recreation and Parks Director Rick Anthony, and other county official took part in a three mile kayak tour of Rhode River in an effort to highlight the FY 2016 budgets investments to increase water access.

“Our waterways are part of Anne Arundel County’s identity,” said Schuh. “With more than 530 miles of coastline, increasing water access to the general public will help secure a brighter future for our waterways and is a major priority of my administration.”

In his budget address in May, the County Executive laid out a bold plan to provide public access on the north and southbound banks of all major waterways in the County.

The FY 2016 budget includes a $1.4 million investment to increase access to the Anne Arundel County waterway system, including:

  • $375,000 for Fort Smallwood Park – Parking to support boat ramp and fishing pier which includes design funds for future concession building to serve ramp users and park users
  • $268,000 to increase overall water access, including funding for roads, parking, piers, stabilized launches.
  • $590,000 for boat ramp development with eight sites under evaluation
  • $172,000 in the Recreation and Parks Project planning account that will include master plan funds for South County Regional Parks; Mayo Beach Park, Beverly Triton Beach Park and South River Farm Park.

The FY 2016 budget became effective July 1, 2015.
