Local Buddhist center to host class on the Buddha of Compassion

Lama Seated on Rocks Best PicThe Gampopa Center will host a Chenrezig: Buddha of Compassion class from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, September 16 through October 21. The center is located at 424 Fourth Street in Annapolis.

The class will be led by Lama Phurbu Tashi Rinpoche.  Born in Tibet in 1973, he is an accomplished scholar, author and meditation master. He teaches extensively in the USA, Asia and Europe. He has studied traditional Dharma (the teachings of the Buddha) and practiced deity meditation with great masters of Tibet and India. His students are consistently attracted to his style of teaching, which is unwaveringly pure and often includes modern humor. The Dalai Lama and the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa have glowingly endorsed his book “The Lamp of Reasoning and Scriptures of the Sage, the Buddha.”

Participants will explore the power of compassion through deity practice and study. Students will study how to recognize and cultivate Bodhicitta, a mind or heart focused first on the benefit of all beings, with the intention to attain enlightenment and to benefit others. This class includes an oral transmission and a visualization card. It will also include instruction in traditional chanting and meditation.

Chenrezig is described as an emanation of the Buddha. Practices such as the Chenrezig sadhana (meditation method) can be approached by someone leading an ordinary life, and the Chenrezig meditation is uncommon in the ease of its performance.

Participants will read related texts, preferably in advance, and practice deity meditation at home for 15 minutes a day.

New practitioners will find the practice effective as it opens the heart to the path of liberation. This practice is very helpful for long-time practitioners who encounter many obstacles on the path. This practice is also suitable for the more advanced practitioners as it will lead deeper into the heart essence of the Buddhist path.

Advance registration is required as seating is limited. The fee for the class is $90. Register at http://www.gampopacenter.com/ or register by mailing a check to Gampopa Center, 1220 Gemini Dr. Unit F, Annapolis, MD 21403. Make the check payable to Gampopa Center. Required texts are an additional amount. For more information, email Karen at [email protected].

The Gampopa Center was founded in 2009 by Tibetan born Lama Phurbu Tashi Rinpoche based on the Buddhist understanding that the teachings of Buddha can bring people peace, happiness, and freedom. The center holds weekly study sessions, short courses, and special events at its Annapolis location.
