Anne Arundel Medical Center, Blood Donor Center

The Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Blood Donor Center, Wayson Pavilion, Suite 450, seeks blood donors age 17 and older, by appointment. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and includes a free mini-physical and cholesterol reading. Parking is free. Contact 443-481-4215.

 

AA County Office of Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness Expo, Sat., Sept. 12, 2015

This Expo is sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management with the purpose of providing information to the public to prepare it for emergencies. The event will be held from 10 AM–2PM, Sat, Sept. 12, 2015 (rain or shine) at the Marley Station Mall, 7900 Ritchie Hwy, Glen Burnie, MD 21061. There will be demonstrations, information booths, giveaways, activities, emergency vehicles, and food. For more information, call the office of Emergency Management at 410-222-0600.  

 

Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is seeking nominations for its 15th Annual Celebrate Philanthropy! Awards Luncheon.  Awards will be presented to the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County’s Philanthropist, Volunteer, Corporate Philanthropist and Foundation of the Year. The winners will receive their awards at the Luncheon which will take place this year on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Loews Annapolis Hotel. Nomination deadline is Thurs., August 13, 2015. Eastport United Methodist Church

Now beginning its eighth year, the Homework and Reading Program at Eastport United Methodist Church offers after-school assistance to elementary and kindergarten children.  Volunteers from the community and the church help students with their homework, provide the opportunity to strengthen their reading, writing, comprehension, math and analytical skills and engage in other educational activities such as a board game, a puzzle, or drawings.   Participants meet twice a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the church, 926 Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis.  Volunteers are not expected to attend all sessions.   They can come as often as their schedules allow.  No special training or credentials are needed. For more information, contact the church at 410-263-5490 or [email protected].

 

Hammond Harwood House

The Hammond-Harwood House Museum, dubbed the jewel of Annapolis, is an 18th century Anglo-Palladian house that contains some of the nation’s premier fine and decorative arts collection. The museum is open for tours, groups, and school programs Tues.– Sun. from April 1 to Dec. 31. Tours are conducted on the hour from 12 noon to 4 p.m.  Opportunities are available for volunteers to work as docents, help in the office, or work on research. To learn more, visit www.hammondharwoodhouse.org or call 410-263-4683. [if !supportLists]·        [endif]12:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Brown Bag Lunch Tours: Hammond-Harwood House is pleased to announce the launch of Brown Bag Lunch Tours this year. There will be a tour at 12:30 p.m. lasting 20 minutes on Tuesdays. After the tour, participants are encouraged to enjoy their lunches in our gardens. Tours will be on a different topic every week ranging from decorative arts to social history, and architecture. Tours cost $5 per person. Reservations are not required. Tours are presented by our Curator Rachel Lovett.

 

The Light House, Run for The Light House, Sun., Sept. 27, 2015

The mission of The Light House is to help rebuild lives with compassion by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition towards self-sufficiency.  Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, front desk help and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed with specialized skills such as accounting, dentistry, licensed therapists, law, and carpentry. ·      7:30 a.m., Sun., September 27, 2015, The 5th annual Annapolis Run for The Light House: The 4th annual Annapolis Run for The Light House provides scenic half-marathon and 5K routes along the trails of Quiet Waters Park and through the beautiful Chesapeake Bay-front community of Hillsmere Shores. This year we’ve added a 1.25 mile Anniversary Walk to this event.  The race start is 8:00 a.m., for the Half Marathon, 7:45 a.m. for the 5K Jogging Joe Shafran Memorial Run, and 9:00 for the Anniversary Walk. Maryland Seafood Festival, Sat.-Sun., Sept. 12-13, 2015

The 48th Annual Maryland Seafood Festival in partnership with The Chesapeake Bay Trust is seeking volunteers for its annual event which will take place at Sandy Point State Park on September 12-13, 2015. Volunteers must be age 21 and up to man the festival front gate, and age 18 and up for VIP host/hostess. In addition help with parking and other miscellaneous festival positions is also needed. Help with Setup is also needed on Thurs.-Fri., Sept. 10-11 and for Break Down on Mon., Sept. 14. Volunteers receive admission to the Festival, free parking and food tickets. Volunteers are needed for 3 shifts between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m on Sat., Sept. 12 and from 9:00 a.m.– 6:30 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 13. Men of Courage International, Inc.

This Annapolis-based nonprofit is dedicated to helping men fulfill their duties as fathers, husbands, and community leaders around the world by providing a safe place for men to talk about how to reach their goal of achieving authentic manhood. Its “Strong Dads” Program partners with local schools to educate and support fathers (grandfathers, uncles, male guardians) in the role they play at schools, in their homes, and in the community at large. The organization provides inspiration and motivation for the fathers by holding events featuring an inspirational speaker, Q&A, live entertainment, and activities that give them the tools they need to continue to grow in their roles as men. Attendees will be invited to participate in family games, fun activities, and different acts of service; they will also have the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment and listen to informative and educational speeches from key members of society.
