Anne Arundel County Spending and Affordability Committee

Councilman Trumbauer is seeking interest from residents of the Sixth District of Anne Arundel County to fill an appointment from his Office to the Spending and Affordabilty Committee. The Committee makes advisory recommendations to the Office of Budget, the County Executive, and the County Council relating to spending affordability, including County spending levels, to reflect the ability of the taxpayer to finance County services and long-term debt. The seven member board meets on a bi-weekly basis at 6:00 p.m. at the Arundel Center in Annapolis, MD from October through January of each year. The requirement for this appointment is a strong financial background. Healthy School Food Maryland

Healthy School Food Maryland is a coalition of organizations and individuals in Maryland working for whole, real, local and safe foods for children in Maryland school cafeterias. Volunteers passionate about nutritious public school foods are needed to help the organization in a variety of ways, including outreach efforts supporting its mission. Homes for America

The mission of Homes for America is to create and preserve safe, quality affordable housing enriched with resident services. Volunteers are always needed to help support onsite resident service programs in our affordable housing communities for both seniors and families with children. Such activities could include tutoring children after school at one of our homework sites, helping with meal preparation and distribution, back to school events, community gardening projects or health and wellness services. We are happy to partner with volunteers and utilize their talents and strengths to create new services or programs that would benefit the residents of Homes for America communities. 2015 Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, Sat. Sept. 26, 2015

Volunteer opportunities are available to help with the 2015 Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival being held at Annapolis City Dock. The annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, coordinated by Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., celebrates the cultural heritage of people of African descent and raises awareness to the challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture.  The festival will be held at the Susan Campbell Park at Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 26, 2015 from 10:00 a.m– 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available for: set up, selling refreshments, clean up, children’s activities tent, greeters and more. St. Mary’s Church English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

St Mary’s ESL Program needs volunteers to teach English one night a week to adult ESL students for the Sept–May school year.  The 7 levels of classes are held on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. evenings, 7:00-8:45 p.m., at St. Mary’s High School in downtown Annapolis, 8 September – 3 December.  Each teacher is asked to commit to one class/one night a week. Spanish-language ability is preferred for beginner classes only. Those with ESL or any teaching experience as well as those with a keen interest in working with students to help them learn/perfect their English are encouraged to apply. Interested volunteers are encouraged to attend the Teacher Training Session scheduled for Saturday, 5 September, 9:00 – 1:00, at St John Newmann’s Church on Bestgate Road. Severna Park Community Center

Volunteer opportunities include helping on committees, help with benefit events (Gala, Golf Tournament, etc.), help support small projects held at the Center, and much more.   • 7:00 am, Sat., Sept. 19, 2015, Karen Stevens Memorial Kid’s Triathlon: Children of all ages are welcome to have fun during this triathlon being held for the seventh year at the Severna Park Community Center, 623 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard Severna Park, MD  21146.   • 4:30–7:30 pm, Sat., Oct. 10, 2015, Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser: The Center is looking for volunteers to help with various jobs that day (set up, senior parking assistance, serving, decorating, clean up, etc) alongside our staff and other volunteers. Wellness House of Annapolis

The mission of The Wellness House of Annapolis is to help people affected by cancer and their family members recover their health and well-being through participation in a professional program of support, education and hope in a “home-like” environment. All of our services are offered free to cancer patients and their care givers. There are many different volunteer opportunities at Wellness House of Annapolis. All services are offered to members for free by our amazing volunteers. We need assistance with our gardens, clerical work, outreach, and hostessing. 6:00pm – 10:00pm, Sat., August 29, 2015, La Fiesta Americana Fundraiser: Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of tasks at this gala fundraiser being held at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. Guests will sample delicious offerings from local restaurants, dance to the hot sounds of award-winning Trio Caliente, and peruse dozens of fabulous silent auction items.
