After winning the first two games of the series, the Baysox pitching struggled Wednesday in a 9-1 loss to Richmond. Both teams relied heavily on their bullpens, using a combined 11 pitchers in the game, but it was the Baysox staff that struggled to keep runs off the board.
Bowie’s troubles began as soon as the game started as the Flying Squirrels were able to get on the scoreboard in the first inning. Baysox starter Gene Escat gave up two walks and a single to load the bases with one out and Richmond grounded out and then singled to bring home two runs. In the second inning, Escat gave up another two walks and two singles which allowed a run to score and put Richmond up 3-0.
Marcel Prado (3-0, 4.99) came in to replace Escat in the fourth inning, but also struggled. Jesus Galindo led off the fourth inning with a double for Richmond, was moved to third on a long fly ball, and reached home on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.
In the fifth Prado walked the first two batters, who then advanced a base on another wild pitch and Devin Harris hit a two RBI double to bring them home. The following batter grounded out to move Harris to third and Prado walked another batter before being replaced by Kenn Kasparek (4-1, 4.30). A ground out and a single scored two more runs before the Baysox were able to get out of the inning, now down 8-0. Prado was charged with all of the runs during the inning.
The Baysox lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning against Richmond reliever Stephen Johnson. Glynn Davis walked, Derrik Gibson singled and the two advanced on a passed ball by Richmond catcher Jackson Williams. Davis was able to score on a groundout from Trey Mancini to put the Baysox on the board and make the score 8-1. Mancini hit a single in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 12 games.
Newly acquired Jason Stoffel (0-0, 9.00) pitched the ninth inning and gave up the final run of the game on two hits. Johnson (3-0, 3.42) picked up his third win of the season for Richmond, throwing 2.1 innings in relief.
Making his third start of the season, Escat threw three innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two and walking four in the loss. Prado threw 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on two hits and three walks. Kasparek, Pat McCoy and Andrew Robinson combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings in the middle of the game and Stoffel threw the final inning, allowing one run on two hits.
The Baysox close the series against Richmond Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. with Joe Gunkel (8-3, 2.89) on the mound. Thursday is American Muscle Night at P.G. Stadium with a pregame car show in the parking lot.
