Last week, the Commission on Disability Issues recognized the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the Commission on Disability Issues at The Independence Resource Center.

“I am inspired by members of the Commission on Disability Issues who share their personal and professional experiences,” said County Executive Steve Schuh.  “They have dedicated themselves throughout the years to overcome barriers for individuals with disabilities.  I am overwhelmed by the opportunity to be a part of these important anniversaries.”

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law in 1990 by George H. W. Bush.  This Act has transformed the lives of people with disabilities in education, employment, transportation, telecommunications and community participation.  Approximately 49,000 individuals with disabilities live in Anne Arundel County.

The Commission on Disability Issues was established in 1995 by Executive Order under former County Executive John Gary and re-promulgated by former County Executive Janet Owens.  The Commission was codified through a bill that was introduced by former Councilman C. Edward Middlebrooks and signed into law in 2006 by County Executive Owens.  The purpose of the Commission is to raise awareness, and to promote and enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities by advising the County Executive and the County Council on the coordination and development of government policies, programs, services, and the allocation of resources.
