Renowned artist, Nancy Hammond, has been honored for her reinvestment in Annapolis, the city where she first became a highly regarded Maryland artist with a national following.

Just six months after opening her new gallery location in the West Street business district, Ms. Hammond was recognized by the Anne Arundel County Council with the President’s Award as a 2015 MainStreets Annapolis Legacy Business Award recipient.  In addition, she received a 2015 Legacy Business Award for Business Reinvestment from the City Council of Annapolis.

These awards recognize Ms. Hammond as a woman-owned, woman-run business with an emphasis on local manufacturing and the sale of Maryland-made products as well as for her commitment to the residents of Annapolis. Her investment in Annapolis’ traditional business district began in 1990 with her Eastport art gallery, before moving to State Circle in 1993 and now, to the West Street Annapolis Arts & Entertainment District.

“I am delighted to be recognized by the City Council, MainStreets Annapolis and the County Council in this manner,” says Nancy Hammond.  “My time at the State Circle location was the most gratifying business experience anyone could ask for — and while we loved our time in Centreville, we just knew it was time to return to the bells and the boating horns, the bridge openings and the USNA parades! I’m so happy to be back in Annapolis – we love our new location.”

Ms. Hammond began her business out of her Eastport garage over two-decades ago.  She later moved her gallery to State Circle, her original storefront in Annapolis, where her artwork became synonymous with life in the state capital and along the Chesapeake. Hammond moved to the Eastern Shore and returned to Annapolis in the fall of 2014 and opened her gallery on West Street.

MainStreets Annapolis Partnership (MAP), along with other dignitaries, honored ten businesses and individuals, including Nancy Hammond, at an awards ceremony in early summer.  They were recognized for their commitment to the City of Annapolis for serving residents and visitors while supporting the economic vitality of neighborhood business districts.

Ms. Hammond began her Chesapeake work with a series of silkscreen prints. Since then she has produced scarves, jewelry, shirts, placemats, etched crystal bowls and ties. A phenomenon was created when Nancy Hammond began offering an annual lithograph poster, signed and numbered, of Annapolis. The release of this poster creates long lines every year that stretch for blocks through the night.  The 2016 annual poster will be revealed on October 17th and the signing and sale event will take place on Saturday, October 24th.

She has produced many limited edition fine art prints. The silkscreen prints are hand pulled from hand cut stencils. All her limited edition giclées and silkscreens are small in number, printed on 100% archival paper, and signed and numbered by the artist. Many works progress simultaneously. Crayons, acrylic paint, glue and a myriad of colorful paper scraps that carpet the floor are evidence of her favorite working medium, cut paper.

Nancy Hammond majored in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her  work has since been chosen to be exhibited in galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Maryland Institute of Art. Nancy Hammond Editions is located at 192 West Street in Annapolis, Maryland and online at www.NancyHammondEditions.com
