Kuhl dominates Baysox in sweep

BaysoxThe Baysox managed just two hits in a shutout 2-0 loss to Altoona and starter Chad Kuhl Sunday afternoon. The loss allowed the Curve to complete a critical three-game series sweep of the Baysox. Bowie now leads Altoona by 3.5 games for first place in the Western Division.

Baltimore Orioles utility Steve Pearce made a second rehab start with the Baysox, going 1-3 with a double in the first inning. He was responsible for one of two Baysox hits in the game.

Altoona put their first run of the game on the board in the fifth inning against Baysox starter Joe Gunkel after a lead-off triple from Jacob Stallings and a sacrifice fly from Stetson Allie.  They added another run in the eighth against Baysox reliever Jason Stoffel on a lead-off double from Allie who was plated on a single from Eric Wood to give Altoona the 2-0 win.

Gunkel (7-3, 2.54) pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits, in his fourth quality start in a row, but it wasn’t enough as the Baysox’ bats fell silent in the shutout. Stoffel pitched the final two innings for the Baysox, allowing one runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kuhl picked up the win, throwing seven innings and allowing two hits while striking out four.

The Baysox begin a three game series at New Britain Monday at 7:05 p.m. with lefty Nick Additon (1-2, 3.86) on the mound. The Baysox return home for an important four game series against the Altoona Curve Monday, August 31. It’s the Baysox final home series of the 2015 regular season.
