Gunkel, Baysox shut down FisherCats

BaysoxThe Baysox took the second game of the series against New Hampshire in a 2-0 shutout victory, led by another strong outing from starter Joe Gunkel (8-3, 2.89). The Baysox have now won nine of the 12 games Gunkel has started since being traded to Baltimore.  

Bowie took the lead in the first inning and never looked back against New Hampshire starter Mike Lee. Trey Mancini extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double and Quincy Latimore brought him home on a single to put the Baysox up 1-0. 

In the fourth inning the Baysox added to their lead. Tucker Nathans singled and attempted to score from first on a double from Garabez Rosa but was thrown out at home. Rosa moved to third on the throw and then scored on a Drew Dosch single to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead. 

Gunkel threw 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and two walks and striking out seven in route to his sixth victory while with the Baysox.  Reliever Pat McCoy (3-2, 3.86) recorded the final out of the seventh inning and Mychal Givens (4-2, 1.79) threw two scoreless innings to close out the game and pick up his 15th save of the season. This was Givens’ first appearance back with the Baysox since being promoted to Baltimore for the second time this season. Lee took his first loss of the season for New Hampshire

The Baysox look to take the series against the Fisher Cats on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Sunday is Pirates and Ninjas Day with the Captain Manny bobblehead giveaway to the first 1,000 fans 13 and older. Gates open at 1:00 p.m.
