Schuh appoints new chief administrative officer

Mark Hartzell, Anne Arundel County Chief Administrative Officer

County Executive Steve Schuh has appointed Mark Hartzell as Anne Arundel County Chief Administrative Officer.

“Mark brings the perfect set of skills to administer effectively county government,” said Schuh. “I promised to make government more efficient, less costly, and more customer friendly to our citizens and Mark’s private sector experience will help accomplish those goals. I’m grateful that a senior executive with global responsibilities is willing to forgo a lucrative private sector position to help his home county.”

Since 2010, Hartzell has been an Executive Vice President with Computershare, Inc. and serves as a member of the U.S. Executive Committee. Computershare is a global provider of financial services. As Executive Vice President, he led the sales and marketing division of the company. As a member of the U.S. Executive Committee, he helped managed approximately 4,000 employees in multiple locations.

Prior to his time at Computershare, Hartzell was a managing director at J.P Morgan Chase, where he led the Global Sales and Client Management organization. J.P Morgan Chase is an American multinational banking and financial services company. It is the largest bank in the United States, with total assets of US$ 2.6 trillion. It is a major provider of financial services, and currently is the world’s third largest public company based on a composite ranking.

Prior to his position at J.P. Morgan Chase, Hartzell held senior management positions at Citibank and U.S. Bancorp.

“The County Executive has made it his mission to make our county the best place to live, work, and start a business in Maryland,” said Hartzell. “Having grown up in Anne Arundel County, I’m honored to have the opportunity to put my private sector experience to work.”

“I have known Mark Hartzell for nearly 40 years. He understands Anne Arundel County and will bring substantial management experience to his new position,” said House of Delegates Speaker Michael Busch. “I am pleased to see the County Executive bring talented people into county government.”

Hartzell grew up in Annapolis. As a teenager, he attended Arundel High School and St. Mary’s High School. He is a graduate of Beloit College. His mother resides in Crofton and his brother, an Anne Arundel County Police Officer for 27 years, lives in Pasadena.

Hartzell’s appointment was effective August 1st.
