Baysox finally fall to the Thunder

BaysoxTrenton finally came away with a victory at Prince George’s Stadium, beating the Baysox 6-4 Saturday night. The win is the first for the Thunder in Bowie since May 26, 2013.

The Baysox entered tonight’s game 19-2 against Trenton dating back to the start of the 2014 season. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Baysox that had given the team a four game division lead over Altoona.

Trenton’s offense got off to a fast start with four hits (more than they had total in Friday’s game) in the top of the first inning against Baysox starter Elih Villanueva. Jake Cave hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to second base on a one out single from Ali Castillo. Mark Payton brought Cave home with a single to center field and Dan Fiorito followed with a walk. With the bases loaded, Francisco Arcia brought home two more runs with a single to right field to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning against Trenton starter Jaron Long. Ozzie Martinez hit a two-out single to left field and Corban Joseph followed with a single to right field that moved Martinez to second base. Trey Mancini brought one run home with a single to right field and Brandon Snyder brought a second run home with another single to right field to make the score 3-2.

The Thunder struck again in the top of the fifth inning. Cave hit a lead-off single and moved to second base on a Danny Oh bunt single to first base. Castillo brought Cave home with a single to center field and Oh scored after a throwing error by first baseman Brandon Snyder to make the score 5-2.

Bowie picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning. David Freitas hit a lead-off single to left field and moved to third base on a Drew Dosch single to right field. Freitas scored when Martinez grounded into a double play to make the score 5-3.

Eddy Rodriguez hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning to give the Thunder a 6-3 lead.

Bowie answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Snyder hit a one out double to center field and Alex Smith then replaced Long on the mound. Quincy Latimore followed with a double to left field that plated Snyder and made the score 6-4.

Villanueva threw 5.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out five and walking one in the loss. Reliever Ashur Tolliver threw 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three batters. Reliever Kenn Kasparek threw a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit.

Long picked up the win for Trenton, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five batters.
