Alliance for the Chesapeake, Aug. 7-8, 2015 Mid-Atlantic Volunteer Water Monitoring Conference

Come join us for the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Volunteer Monitoring Conference on August 7-8, 2015The theme of the conference will be Bridging the Data Gap. Attend one or both days of the conference for discussion, workshops and informative field-trips. Last day for registration is 7/23/2015. Box of Rain Foundation

This nonprofit was formed to honor the memory of Lee Griffin & his passion for sailing to teach life building skills through maritime experiences for local youth-at-risk, targeting kids 9-14 years old. Volunteer are needed as mentors for the big sailor/little sailor program and as sailing instructors. Donations of funds and safety boats for sailing classes, boats, boating equipment – especially life preservers and gear are also being sought. Our summer program hours are 9:30 – 3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During the academic year, we schedule activities after school and on weekends. Box of Rain also partners with the City of Annapolis Police and Recreation and Parks Departments in the Revolution Kids bicycle program. Revolution Kids is involved in community bike drives, repairing donated bicycles, hosting an annual bike sale, and visiting local scout groups to teach bike safety and rules of the road. Currently the bike shop is housed within the Pip Moyer Recreation Center at Truxton Park. Classes meet each Thursday from 5:30-7:30pm. Captain Avery Museum

The Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side is in need of docents to serve on Sundays from 1–4 p.m.  They will guide tourists through the 1860 home of the buy boat Captain Salem Avery.  Also on the tour is a display area with an exhibit of the photographic work of Lynn and Tom Abercrombie for the National Geographic Magazine. The recently enhanced grounds will also be on display to be enjoyed by visitors. The Library holds a collection of oral history videos of many older local residents as well as documented information on the history of the communities in Shady Side. Chesapeake Arts Center

Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to serve as ushers, ticket attendants, and help with concessions and will call for performances at the Hammonds Lane and/or Studio 194 Theatres. Volunteers can also help in the office, conducting daily administrative duties, distribution of flyers/newsletters in the community, mailings, and more. Extra volunteers are also needed to help with special events such as the Gala, gardening help for the front garden is also needed. Scenic Rivers Land Trust

The Scenic Rivers Land Trust is a private, nonprofit 501(C)(3), non-governmental organization that protects the scenic and natural qualities of the Severn, South, West, Rhode and Patuxent Rivers and their surrounding lands. The Trust has been preserving land in Anne Arundel County since 1988 and today holds conservation easements on 61 properties, totaling 2,700 acres. Interested parties are invited to a South River Greenway Happy Hour gathering from 7:00-9:00pm, Wed., July 29, 2015, at The Green Turtle, Waugh Chapel Towne Center in Gambrills. There will be informal discussions on opening public access to Bacon Ridge Natural Area; How protecting your land can provide property, income and estate tax benefits; and, Advocating the use of Forest Conservation Act funds for providing cash incentives to preserve forest lands. Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)

SERC leads the Nation in research on linkages of land and water ecosystems in the coastal zone and provides society with knowledge to meet critical environmental challenges in the 21st century. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to help SERC with its mission. See the website at: http://serc.si.edu. Upcoming projects for which volunteers are needed include:

[if !supportLists]·        [endif]8 a.m.–4 p.m., July 20–30 (weekdays), 2015, Annual Wetland Plant Census: Volunteer citizen scientists, age 16 and up, are needed for a minimum of one half-day, however it is best to have people come for a whole day, ideally for multiple days in a row.  This involves working in the tidal marsh (on boardwalks) at SERC to count and measure all of the plants in the experimental plots and working in the lab to sort samples and conduct analyses.  For more information and to sign up online visit www.aacvc.org/OpportunityCalendar or contact Alison Cawood at [email protected] or 443-482-2271.

[if !supportLists]·        [endif]8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Aug. 14-16 and Aug. 21-23, 2015, Mud Crab Parasite Project: A large number of volunteers, age 12 and up, are needed to help with sampling mud crabs for the Loxo parasite on the Rhode River, and other locations around the Chesapeake Bay on Aug. 14-16 and Aug. 21-23, 2015. University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center Camp Airways Aug. 3-7, 2015

Camp Airways is a week long day camp (August 3-7) held at Woods Memorial Church in Severna Park designed for children ages 6-12 with asthma. Campers will participate in a range of activities including asthma and nutrition education, arts and crafts, swimming and other outdoor activities. The goal of the camp is to teach children with asthma how to live with and manage their condition, as well as provide opportunities to interact with other children with asthma. Junior counselors are also needed to help with everyday activities. Junior counselors must be at least 15 years of age and available to attend camp from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Responsibilities include serving as a mentor or “camp buddy” for two assigned campers and assisting campers with daily activities including arts and crafts, asthma education, swimming and other outdoor activities. All counselors must provide their own transportation to and from camp each day. Registration is required for campers and counselors.
