UPDATE:  In talking with someone close to the investigation, the Annapolis City Police drove the victim to Mercy Medical directly knowing that the Rape Kits were not available at AAMC.

UPDATE: Anne Arundel Medical Center has advised that in order to administer a Rape Kit, it must be done by a Forensic Nurse Examiner. It is unknown if there is one on staff at the facility.

A young woman was raped near the intersection of Duke of Gloucester and St. Mary’s Streets early Saturday morning in Annapolis.

Although the Annapolis Police Department has declined to release the report or any information, we have learned that the victim was questioned at length by the police and transported to Baltimore for administering of a Rape Kit.  The victim was told that the local hospital does not have any rape kits to collect the forensic evidence needed. She was referred to Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.

Screenshot 2015-07-22 08.59.32We have submitted a formal public information request for the police report (redacted as needed to protect privacy of the victim) to the Annapolis Police Department and the City Attorney and will follow up when we receive it.  The rape was not reported by the police in  the daily police report, nor is it listed on the City’s Crime Reporting and Statistics Website.

We are also trying to find out why a major hospital in the County would not have rape kits for a jurisdiction that has averaged nearly 10 rapes per year over the past 13 years.
