Late SeaWolves rally stuns Baysox

BaysoxTrailing 7-3 entering the eighth inning, the Erie SeaWolves rallied for seven runs to shock the Baysox 10-8 in a come-from-behind win Sunday afternoon. The loss was just the second for the Baysox this season when leading after seven innings as the two teams combined for 35 hits in the game.

The Baysox offense scored in six consecutive innings starting in the bottom of the third, but that was not enough to overcome the SeaWolves seven run inning that saw the Baysox use four different pitchers.

The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the third inning against Erie starter Derek Hankins. Ozzie Martinez hit a lead-off ground rule double to left field and moved to third base on a bunt single by Johnny Ruettiger. Corban Joseph singled to second base on a ball that hit Hankins, allowing Martinez to score and giving the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

Erie took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Mikey O’Brien. Curt Powell hit a lead-off double to left field and scored on a Jason Krizan single to right field. With one out, Connor Harrell was hit by a pitch and Austin Green followed with a 2-RBI double to right field to give the SeaWolves a 3-1 lead.

Bowie got one run back in the bottom half of the inning against Erie reliever Confesor Lara. Rossmel Perez hit a one out single to center field and moved to second base on a Tucker Nathans groundout. Martinez then brought Perez home with a single to left field to make the score 3-2.

The Baysox came back to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Quincy Latimore hit a lead-off single to left field, Trey Mancini doubled to right field and Brandon Snyder walked to load the bases with none out. Joe Mantiply then replaced Lara on the mound and surrendered a sacrifice fly to David Freitas. Perez followed with an RBI single to center field that moved Snyder to third base where he scored on a Nathans sacrifice fly to give the Baysox a 5-3 lead.

Bowie added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joseph hit a one out infield single to shortstop and moved to third base on a Latimore single to left field. Mancini then brought Joseph home with a single to left field to extend the Baysox lead to 6-3.

The Baysox kept the runs coming in the bottom of the seventh inning against Erie reliever Ryan Robowski. Nathans hit a two-out double to center field and scored on a Martinez single to deep shortstop to give the Baysox a 7-3 lead.

The SeaWolves rallied to stun the Baysox in the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Tim Berry recorded the first out of the inning but was then replaced on the mound by Kenn Kasparek. Kasparek surrendered four consecutive singles to allow the first run of the inning before recording a strikeout for the second out. Tony Thomas then struck a major blow to the Baysox with a grand slam to left field before a single from Powell ran Kasparek from the game. Marcel Prado replaced Kasparek on the mound and walked consecutive batters to load the bases before a Harrell single capped the scoring and gave Erie a 10-7 lead. Reliever Richard Rodriguez replaced Prado on the mound to record the final out of the inning.

In his first Baysox start, O’Brien pitched five innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five in the no decision. Reliever Ashur Tolliver pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Baysox, allowing two hits and striking out two. Making his first appearance out of the bullpen, Berry threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Kasparek recorded one out in the eighth inning as he allowed six runs on six hits in the loss. Prado did not record an out and allowed one run on one hit and two walks. Rodriguez threw the final 1.1 scoreless innings for the Baysox, allowing one hit.

Robowski picked up the win for Erie, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one.

The Baysox continue a six-game homestand Monday afternoon with Mutt Monday as Baysox weeknight games shift to 7:05 p.m. Bowie is home through Thursday, July 9 with games against the Erie SeaWolves and Akron RubberDucks. RHP Parker Bridwell (3-4, 4.04) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow against Erie’s RHP Tommy Collier (2-0, 2.47).
