Late run pushes Baysox to a sweep

BaysoxThe Baysox scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and grab a 2-1 win over Akron Wednesday to complete the three-game series sweep. Baysox starter Terry Doyle tossed seven one-run innings as the Baysox have now won his last 13 games started.

Bowie’s game-winning rally came in the top of the ninth inning against Akron reliever Casey Weathers. Tucker Nathans hit a two-out single to left field and scored on a Dave Freitas double to center field to give the Baysox the 2-1 win. 

The Baysox struck quickly in the top of the first inning against Akron starter Ryan Merritt. Mike Yastrzemski hit a lead-off double to center field and Trey Mancini followed with a one out double to center field to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.

Ronny Rodriguez tied the game 1-1 with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Doyle.

Doyle threw seven innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out two and walking one in a no decision. Reliever Jason Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning while picking up the win. Mychal Givens earned his team-leading 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Baysox return home Thursday, July 30 for a four game homestand against the Trenton Thunder. Bowie is 6-1 against the Thunder so far this season, including sweeping a four game home series earlier this season. LHP Ariel Miranda (0-0, 0.00) will pitch for the Baysox Thursday against RHP Brady Lail (6-3, 2.24) Thursday is Back Hair Appreciation Night at PG Stadium starting at 7:05 p.m.
