Baysox suffer tough shutout loss

BaysoxThe Baysox dropped their third consecutive home game as Akron took the series opener in Bowie on Tuesday night.  The Baysox gave up a season-high tying 18 hits and suffered one of their worst losses of the season in a 10-0 shutout.

With Joe Gunkel (4-2, 2.83) on the mound, the RubberDucks got off to a fast start on a home run from second baseman Todd Hankins in the very first at-bat of the game.  The RubberDucks never looked back, and furthered their lead in the second after Jordan Smith led off with a double and was moved to third on a single from Bryson Myles.  Jeremy Lucas then grounded into a double play, but Smith was able to score on the play and give the RubberDucks a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning with two outs, Bryson Myles hit a double and was plated by a single from Jeremy Lucas to put Akron up 3-0.  Designated hitter Anthony Gallas crushed his eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning and the RubberDucks took a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh inning, with Marcel Prado (3-0, 3.80) pitching, Akron’s Yandy Diaz and Gallas hit back-to-back singles and were brought home on a long double to right field from Carlos Moncrief, which gave Akron a 6-0 lead.

The RubberDucks added another run in the eighth on a throwing error from second baseman Corban Joseph on an attempt to turn an inning ending double play. Akron plated three more runs in the ninth inning against reliever Gene Escat for a 10-0 win.  Akron starter Adam Plutko (4-2, 2.25) took the win after 6.2 shutout innings.

Gunkel threw five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking one in his first loss with the Baysox. Berry pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Prado pitched one inning and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out the side. Reliever Kenn Kasparek allowed one unearned run in the eighth inning on two hits and a strikeout. Escat pitched the ninth inning and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits.
