BikeAAA distributes hundreds of helmets to county children

BikeBicycle Advocates for Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (“BikeAAA”) in partnership with several other organizations has been busy this summer  providing bicycle safety instruction and bike helmets to hundreds of Anne Arundel County children and adults.    BikeAAA is an all-volunteer 501c3 that advocates for safe biking for transportation, recreation and health countywide.

BikeAAA organized this free program in collaboration with several important partners.   Under a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office, BikeAAA acquired over 700 bike helmets which are now being distributed to underprivileged children and adults in conjunction with a bike safety education and training program.  Vend Central of Halethorpe, MD is providing helmet storage to support the program.    Bike Maryland, the statewide bike advocacy group, delivers the program using certified bike safety instructors and brings bikes and a mobile skills course that can be set up in a playground, parking area or gym.     The programs are delivered to 1st through 6th grade children at Summer Fun Centers and Fun ‘N Play programs sponsored by Anne Arundel County Recreation & Parks.   Similar programs are delivered through other organizations including Annapolis Recreation & Parks and the Lighthouse Shelter.

According to BikeAAA board member and program leader Steve Miller “This safety program has been well received by hundreds of county children who find the program to be a fun learning experience.    We aim to establish safe riding habits that will last a lifetime .”
